Shopping center hosts school supply drive
Pukalani Terrace Center and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui will host a back-to-school supply drive through July 16 at the shopping center.
Donation bins are located at Ace Hardware, Kalei’s Lunchbox, Subway and the Bank of Hawaii Pukalani Branch.
In conjunction with the school supply drive, the center will host a celebration event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 16 in front of Foodland. There will be prize giveaways, live music, keiki hula and free food and drinks.
“We are thrilled to support our community and Upcountry keiki with our first back-to-school drive,” said Sandy Yamada, property manager of Pukalani Town Center. “We encourage the community to come out and make a difference this school season.”

Scholarship for youth musicians available
Students ages 18 or younger interested in the study of stringed instruments are invited to apply for the inaugural Karla Bartholomy Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship requirements and application process will be explained during two online information events held at 6 p.m. on July 12 and 7:30 p.m. on July 14 on Zoom.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is July 29.

Kupuna spelling bee to begin July 9
Hawaii residents ages 60 and older will compete in a statewide Kupuna Spelling Bee event benefitting the Alzheimer’s Association Hawaii beginning July 9.
There will be four in-person public competitions, one on each of the four major islands, in addition to one virtual event that will be held via Zoom.
An in-person public competition will be held on Maui at 9 a.m. on July 9 at Puunene School in Kahului. The virtual event will take place at 9 a.m. on July 16.
The deadline to register as a participant is July 5. The cost to participate is a $10 donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. All Hawaii residents ages 60 and older are eligible to participate in three age categories.
The two top winners in each age category from each preliminary spelling bee will receive a medal and advance to compete for prizes at the 2022 statewide Kupuna Spelling Bee on July 23. Finalists will also have the option to compete virtually.
Alaska Airlines will award the grand prize winner a pair of round-trip tickets to anywhere the airline flies. To register, visit kupunaspellingbee.com.

Association hosts author presentation
The Portuguese Association of Maui will host a free presentation by author Donna Binkiewicz at 7 p.m. on July 12 at Heritage Hall in Paia.
Binkiewicz will talk about her book, “Between the Sea and Sky: The Saga of My Portuguese-American Family in Upcountry Maui, 1881-1941.” She will have copies available to autograph.

Local nonprofit Maui Cancer Resources will host a free “Growing Stronger” workshop for cancer survivors from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 16 at St. Theresa Church in Kihei.

Mahi Pono awards two scholarships
Maui farming company Mahi Pono recently awarded two $3,000 Mahi Pono Scholarship awards to Moani Tiare Atay of Kamehameha Schools Maui and Nakoa Benjamin of Maui High School.
The Mahi Pono Scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors in Maui County who are seeking to pursue further education towards a career in an agriculture-related field.
This fall, Atay will attend Oregon State University, where she plans to major in environmental science. Benjamin will attend Linfield University, where he plans to study agriculture.
“The future of food sustainability on Maui depends on our kuleana to equip the next generation,” said Shan Tsutsui, chief operating officer for Mahi Pono. “We are glad to support two of Maui’s brightest as they pursue higher education in an agriculture-related field, and we look forward to seeing the many ways that they will help contribute to our Maui community through their education.”

MHLA raises $40K for scholarships
The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association raised $40,000 for youth scholarships at the 25th Annual “Excellence in Education presented by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits” golf tournament on June 24.
The funds raised will go to Maui Junior Golf; the University of Hawaii Maui College’s culinary arts, hospitality and tourism programs; and the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism programs at Baldwin, Lahainaluna and Maui High schools,
